Following backlash over a dialogue referencing Ilaiyaraaja in Karuppu, Dream Warrior Pictures clarified that they had no intention of offending the legendary composer. In a detailed statement, the team said the line was meant in a broader satirical context, not as a personal remark.

Dream Warrior Pictures issued a press statement on Tuesday to express “sincere respect and admiration” following a controversy that began with a dialogue in their film Karuppu, starring Suriya. The letter acknowledged that Ilaiyaraaja had felt upset for the use of a particular dialogue in the film, and it claimed that the makers of the RJ Balaji film had “no intention to offend, hurt, or disrespect Mr Ilaiyaraaja, his contribution, or his rights in any manner. The reference formed part of a broader satirical context and was not conceived as a personal remark directed at him.”

The makers also said that they would be removing the said dialogue from future versions of the film. The letter said, “We deeply value and respect his feelings and, as a gesture of our regard, we have decided to remove/modify the concerned portion in future versions and subsequent exploitations of the film. We extend our sincere regards and continue to hold him in the highest respect.”

The makers had posted a gross collection of ₹140 crore for the film, just three days after release. Even before release, the film has shown strong momentum at the box office through advance bookings. According to Sacnilk, Karuppu has already sold around 1.6 lakh tickets across 4,333 shows in India, collecting an estimated gross of ₹2.67 crore. Tamil Nadu has emerged as the film’s strongest market with ₹2.11 crore in advance sales, followed by Karnataka with ₹24.06 lakh. The Telugu version has also recorded encouraging early numbers.

Karuppu features Suriya in the titular role of Karuppuswamy, while Trisha Krishnan plays a lawyer named Preethi. RJ Balaji also stars in a key role. The supporting cast includes acclaimed actors Indrans, Natty Subramaniam, Swasika, Sshivada and Supreeth Reddy. The film’s technical crew includes music composer Sai Abhyankkar, cinematographer G.K. Vishnu and editor R. Kalaivanan.
