The teaser for Drishyam 3, directed by Jeethu Joseph, has been released, offering the first glimpse of the concluding chapter in one of India’s most successful thriller franchises. The nearly two-minute promo brings back Mohanlal as Georgekutty, a man once defined by quiet ingenuity, now marked by visible fear.
Opening with a voiceover, Georgekutty reflects on the past and the lengths he went to protect his family, reiterating the central premise that has driven the series since Drishyam. The story follows a cable operator whose life unravels after his family becomes implicated in the disappearance of a senior police officer’s son. The sequel, Drishyam 2, expanded the narrative, suggesting that while evidence could be buried, consequences rarely are.
The new teaser suggests a shift in tone. Georgekutty, who previously appeared composed under pressure, admits that “this time, he is scared”. The case that once seemed closed is described as something that “can never actually close”, indicating renewed scrutiny and escalating stakes. The visuals lean heavily on close-ups and fragments of past events, underscoring a sense of lingering unease rather than offering concrete plot revelations.
Released in 2013, Drishyam became the highest-grossing Malayalam film of its time and was widely remade across Indian languages, as well as internationally. Its sequel debuted on streaming during the Covid-19 lockdown and achieved similar reach. Together, the films established a reputation for tightly constructed narratives and unexpected twists, setting high expectations for the final instalment.
However, early reactions to the teaser have been measured. Much of the footage revisits key moments from the earlier films, relying on familiarity rather than new developments. While the technical team remains consistent, with cinematography by Satheesh Kurup and music by Anil Johnson, the teaser stops short of delivering a definitive hook.
Drishyam 3 is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on 21 May, coinciding with Mohanlal’s 66th birthday. Produced by Antony Perumbavoor under Aashirvad Cinemas, the film will mark the conclusion of a story that has spanned over a decade.
