The two-minute trailer of Drishyam’s conclusion paints a very real picture of Gerogekutty, the series’s most enigmatic character. It begins with a character explaining to this family how almost everyone in their home state is aware of the real truth behind the crime the family has committed. In the background, we see several new characters doing their bit to piece together different versions of Georgekutty’s puzzlingly complex character. While one person describes him as ‘wily like a fox’, another says he is someone who thinks several steps ahead of his enemies.
The trailer also suggests that this film will be more about the flaws and the personal moral dilemmas that George navigates, 13 years after committing a crime to protect his family. In certain shots, we see the man struggling under the weight of his secret, even when his family looks to him for confidence.
Other characters like Geetha Prabhakar (Asha Sarath) and her husband Prabhakar (played by Siddique) can be seen struggling to outlive the personal tragedy of their son’s “disappearance”. A particularly painful dialogue shows Georgekutty expressing his worry about what his daughters think of him, revealing how he thinks of himself as a criminal.
Released in 2013, Drishyam became the highest-grossing Malayalam film of its time and was widely remade across Indian languages, as well as internationally. Its sequel debuted on streaming during the COVID-19 lockdown and achieved similar reach. Together, the films established a reputation for tightly constructed narratives and unexpected twists, setting high expectations for the final instalment.
Drishyam 3 is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on 21 May, coinciding with Mohanlal’s 66th birthday. Produced by Antony Perumbavoor under Aashirvad Cinemas, the film will mark the conclusion of a story that has spanned over a decade.
