Beyond the upcoming release of Patriot, Mammootty’s slate reflects a commitment to narrative-driven cinema. In a recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, the veteran actor discussed his future projects, providing insight into the much-anticipated Padayatra, which marks his reunion with director Adoor Gopalakrishnan after almost 30 years. “Again, it’s a content-oriented or a plot-oriented film,” he said, revealing that he plays a Gandhian doctor dedicated to serving the marginalized located in the forests of Wayanad.

The inspiration for the project appears to come from a true story. “I have even met a doctor in Wayanad. He takes his scooter with his wife with medicine. He goes to the forest and treats people,” he shared, revealing that the story is one about passion to do good and aims to connect with the audience whose story it aims to tell. The focus on grounded, socially conscious storytelling aligns with the actor prioritizing scripts that are plot-focused.

Beyond specific roles, the actor also shared where he wants to see Malayalam cinema in the future. Acknowledging the recent surge of interest in films from various regions, he shared, “I wish Malayalam cinema becomes international now that the barrier of language is gone. We are making films, good films but we do not have more audience,” noting that the access has significantly increased, “Now with modern technology, the cinema is going to more people. I want Malayalam cinema to go to more and more people,” he further shared.

As he moves from Patriot to Padayatra, his choices reflect a focus on upholding the standards of the Malayalam industry. Padayatra is directed by Adoor Gopalakrishnan who co-wrote the script with novelist K. V. Mohan Kumar. It is being produced under the banner of Mammootty Kampany and recently wrapped its 40-day shoot in Kerala. The film is slated for a 2026 release.
