Premada Oorali, a Kannada film directed by Manoj Kumar, achieved a remarkable ₹58 crore gross in 18 days, despite a modest ₹2.5 crore budget. Viewer recommendations drove its success, turning initial sparse crowds into packed screenings, making it one of the most profitable films in Kannada cinema.
After an opening day that drew a sparse crowd, the latest Kannada family drama Premada Oorali, directed by Manoj Kumar, has reached an unprecedented estimated ₹58 crore gross in India across seventeen days of release, according to Sacnilk. That works out to roughly 23 times the ₹2.5 crore reportedly spent on production.
The film began with earning of around ₹9 lakh from 60 screenings. By Day 15, it climbed to 1,178 shows at 57 per cent occupancy, taking cumulative gross to ₹39.05 crore and net to ₹33.47 crore. On Day 16, screenings dipped to 831, and Sacnilk’s live estimate put the net at ₹3.73 crore by 5 pm, lifting the running net total to ₹37.20 crore. On Day 18, its India net earnings were reported to be ₹49.73 crore.
Funds for its publicity were reported to be scarce. A day before release, Kumar is said to have feared the film might go unwatched. The team then printed cards modelled on wedding invitations, rode public buses and handed them to strangers, asking commuters to give the film a chance. Word of mouth then appears to have done the rest.
Premada Oorali has also been grouped with Hanuman Ansh and Laalo, other modestly funded titles that went on to earn crores. The film is now being described in some quarters as among the most profitable in Kannada cinema.
