Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions is reportedly backing a large-scale historical-devotional epic on Radha and Krishna, directed by Avane Srimannarayana filmmaker Sachin Ravi. The film will trace Krishna’s journey from birth to Kansa’s defeat, centring on the divine love story. The team aims for grand visuals while preserving the emotional, romantic and tragic ethos of the iconic scripture-based tale.
Filmmaker Karan Johar is entering a new space of films: historical-devotional epic. The producer will reportedly back the epic love story of Radha Krishna for the big screen.
According to a report in Pinkvilla, the project — produced by Dharma Productions — will bring together history, love and grand visuals, with filmmaker Sachin Ravi attached to direct. Ravi had made the 2019 Kannada fantasy adventure Avane Srimannarayana.
The publication quoted a source stating that Johar had been wanting to make a film on Radha Krishna for the longest time, and he has "finally found a script that does justice to one of the biggest and most iconic love stories from the Indian scriptures." The film is currently in advanced stages of development.
The team is aiming to mount the film on a grand scale without losing the "core ethos of emotions, romance, drama and tragedy" that derives from the divine story of Radha Krishna.
“The film will chronicle the journey from Krishna’s birth to the killing of Kansa, but at the core of it is the divine love story of Radha and Krishna,” the publication reported.
No other details about the film, including cast and a shooting timelines, is out yet.
Sachin Ravi's Avane Srimannarayana was a hit in Kannada and featured Rakshit Shetty and Shanvi Srivastava. The filmmaker has also worked as an editor on other Kannada films like Kirik Party, Ulidavaru Kandhate and Simple Agi Ondh Love Story.
On the directorial front, Johar last directed the 2023 romantic-drama Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt. He is yet to announce his next directorial, which is rumoured to be a multi-starrer family drama.
