Malayalam filmmaker Don Palathara’s seventh feature Ekadesham will world premiere in competition at Filmfest Aachen, running September 23-27, marking its first screening outside India. Malayalam filmmaker Don Palathara’s seventh feature Ekadesham will have its world premiere in competition at Filmfest Aachen in Germany, running September 23-27, marking its first screening outside India. The Aachen bow will be the film's first screening outside India, and its team is hoping the film travels further on the festival circuit afterwards.
Set in Kochi, Ekadesham follows a group of young people trying to build lives centred on cinema, as they contend with precarious employment, shifting relationships and personal compromise while searching for stability amid the instability of contemporary life.
Presented by Artisan Films, Ekadesham is Palathara's seventh feature. The cast includes Roshan Mathew, Jithin Puthenchery, Divya Prabha, Vinay Forrt, Arsha Baiju and Mahesh Narayanan, with Shanti Balachandran, Kenshin, Sherin Catherine, Parvathy Ayyappadas, Jain Andrews and Arun Cherukavil rounding out the ensemble.
Palathara wrote, directed and edited the film. Ramith Kunjimangalam serves as associate cinematographer and Art Kunjeri as associate director. Basil C.J. composed the score, with Adarsh Joseph Palattam and Mohammed Sajid handling location sound. Dan Jose has mixed sound, Arun Varma has designed it, Sreekumar Nair serves as colourist, and Dileepdas has handled publicity design.
Palathara has built a reputation as one of Malayalam cinema's most closely watched independent voices, with Family having drawn festival attention before Ekadesham's development. The new film's Aachen premiere places it on a growing list of Malayalam titles reaching European festival audiences this year, part of a broader push by regional Indian filmmakers to find footing on the international circuit outside the more heavily coveted Cannes and Busan pipelines.
