After several delays before release, Suriya’s RJ Balaji-directed Karuppu released on Friday. The film has so far been declared a hit and the film has been attracting larger sections of the audience to the theatres since the weekend.
On Sunday, the film’s director RJ Balaji posted a thank you note which also doubles up as a cautionary tale for those experiencing overwhelming reactions during the movie. Urging audeince members to be kind towards people experiencing “divine energy”, he asked members to donate “a moment of compassion towards them,” which he calls a sacred act.
He writes, “If you happen to be seated near someone who appears to be touched by divine energy during a screening, please be kind. Please be present. Help them with water, with space, with a steady hand. Inform the theatre staff so they can be cared for with dignity. A moment of compassion from a stranger is, in itself, a sacred act.”
The director also thanked distributors and exhibitors for extending their support and added, “We're hearing stories from across Tamil Nadu and beyond, of audiences cheering, weeping. and in many instances, being so deeply moved that they've experienced something far greater than cinema. Some have felt divine intervention within the theatre itself. To us, this is the highest blessing our film could have received.”
The film is steadily moving towards the ₹100 crore milestone at the domestic box-office, and has hit 147 crore worldwide. The fantasy action entertainer registered a strong opening weekend, drawing audiences across both Tamil and Telugu markets.
As per industry tracker Sacnilk, the film earned ₹ 28.35 crore net on its third day in India, across 6,843 shows nationwide.
Karuppu stars Suriya and Trisha Krishnan in the lead, alongside Yogi Babu, Jaffer Sadiq, Mansoor Ali Khan and Indrans. The film features music by Sai Abhyankkar and cinematography by GK Vishnu.
