Veteran Tamil filmmaker, actor and screenwriter K Bhagyaraj passed away after suffering a heart attack in Chennai on Saturday. He was 73.

His passing marks the loss of one of Tamil cinema's most influential creative voices, as his films reshaped family entertainment through razor-sharp screenwriting, relatable characters and relevant storytelling.

Bhagyaraj is survived by his wife, actor Poornima Bhagyaraj, and their children, actor Shanthanu Bhagyaraj and Saranya Bhagyaraj.

According to reports, the filmmaker had remained active until recently and had attended social events just days before his death.

Born Krishnaswamy Bhagyaraj in Erode, Tamil Nadu, he entered the film industry as an assistant to legendary filmmaker Bharathiraja before emerging as a successful writer, director and actor in his own right. Over a career spanning nearly five decades, he became synonymous with middle-class family dramas that blended humour, romance and social commentary.

Bhagyaraj made his directorial debut with Suvarilladha Chiththirangal (1979), which also featured him in a lead role. He went on to deliver several critically acclaimed and commercially successful films, including Oru Kai Osai, Mouna Geethangal, Andha 7 Naatkal, Mundhanai Mudichu, Dhavani Kanavugal, Chinna Veedu and Enga Chinna Rasa.

Successful Tamil director and actor Parthiban is among Bhagyaraj’s assistants. His films often featured flawed yet endearing protagonists, witty dialogue and memorable emotional moments that resonated across generations. He directed more than 25 films and acted in over 75 movies during his illustrious career.
