This week brings multiple familiar faces and franchises back to the screen. One of the country’s most highly anticipated family thriller franchises, Drishyam, is back for its third, and what is said to be its final installment, with actors Ajay Devgn and Jaideep Ahlawat at the helm of a thrilling chase.
Audiences will see Vijay Sethupathi taking the lead as a criminal in an action-drama, Nivin Pauly headlining a fantasy drama and another one in the genre presented by veteran filmmaker SS Rajamouli and starring Fahadh Faasil.
On the English front, Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson are set to share the screen for the first time in a psychological drama while Tom Cruise breaks from the Mission Impossible action with a comedy. This week also brings Hindi and Tamil releases across Netflix, ZEE5 and Prime Video.
Here's what to watch in theatres and on streaming this week:
Hindi
Ajay Devgn is set to make a return for the third installment of this highly anticipated franchise. Dirshyam: The Conclusion will see him reprise his role as his revered character Vijay Salgaonkar which he has gained immense appraise for sing the series began in 2015.
Directed by Abhishek Pathak, who also directed Drishyam 2, the film picks up from where the second instalment left off, this time pitting Devgn’s character against SP Crime Branch officer Ranveer Singh Tomar, played by the newest member of the crew, Jaideep Ahlawat. Tomar, a relentless investigator determined to bring the truth and a high-stakes to light after years of it staying buried.
Tabu and Rajat Kapoor will return as IG Meera Deshmukh and Mahesh Deshmukh while Shriya Saran, Ishita Dutta and Mrunal Jadhav will reprise their roles as the Salgaonkar family members: Nandini Salgaonkar, Anju Salgaonkar and Anu Salgaonkar.
The film is set for a theatrical release on October 2.
Marking Veer Pahariya’s second venture on screen, Prem Keetanu is a light-hearted comedy drama set in a college backdrop. Headlined by Pahariya, the film follows a group of rowdy and reckless group of friends navigating a common college arc: love, heartbreak, relationships, career challenges and the chaos of growing up.
Directed by Apoorv Singh Karki, the film also stars Aafiya Sayed, Aparshakti Khurana and Rakesh Bedi in lead roles.
Prem Keetanu will release in theatres on October 2.
Set in the fictional village of Dhadakpur, whose residents navigate everyday small-town disputes and misadventures, season two of Amazon Prime Video’s original series Dupahiya picks up with a new set of complications for its characters, paired with bigger stakes and double the chaos from the first season.
The new season brings back the original cast, including Gajraj Rao, Renuka Shahane, Sparsh Shrivastava, Bhuvan Arora, Shivani Raghuvanshi and Yashpal Sharma. Bhojpuri actor and singer Dinesh Lal Yadav joins the cast for season two.
The new season arrives on the platform on October 1.
Huma Qureshi and Mrunal Thakur lead Navjot Gulati's upcoming courtroom drama. Thakur plays the role of a young woman named Pooja who follows a series of unsettling events after she rejects romantic gestures from a close friend. Qureshi plays Sana, a lawyer who becomes deeply involved in the case as she investigates the events at the root of the issue. The film also stars Vijay Raaz and Vikram Singh Chauhan in pivotal roles
Pooja Meri Jaan will stream on ZEE5 on October 2.
Netflix comedy series Chumbak — that released just earlier this month, on September 10 — starring Neena Gupta, Deven Bhojani, Amyra Dastur, Arjun Bijlani, Anant V. Joshi and Helly Shah, is now back for a part 2.
With all cast members reprising their original roles and returning to life in their Mumbai colony, the new episodes build on a family dispute that quickly concerns the entire neighbourhood when Priyanka's (Manasi Parekh) son decides to file for divorce. As tensions between the family and the colony members spiral, Rajini (Gupta) and Kuku (Bhojani) attempt to mend the chaos.
Chumbak Part 2 will premiere on Netflix on October 1.
Tamil
The Telugu action film Sigma marks the directorial debut of Jason Sanjay, the son of Tamil cinema superstar and the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay, and is led by Sundeep Kishan (Super Subbu).
In the film, which draws on elements from the world of gambling and racing, Kishan, plays a fearless man on the run who will defy all norms and enter dangerous territory to fight against a ₹500 crore racket run by an underworld figure named Veeraiya Reddy, played by Sampath Raj.
This high-octane heist comedy also stars Faria Abdullah as Sam, an RJ, and Kishan’s love interest in the film. The film is set to release in theaters on October 2.
Baththa is written and directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan and marks his third collaboration with Vijay Sethupathi. The film will also bring the actor and Lijomol Jose together on screen for the first time.
Set in 1986 Madras, the action-drama builds on the events after an 8 year old boy unintentionally locks Baththa (Sethupathi) a criminal, inside a school restroom. As he faces hunger and isolation, there emerges an expected friendship between him and the boy. The film also stars Hari Krishnan and Sahasra Sree in pivotal roles.
Baththa will arrive in theatres on October 1.
Marking Nivin Pauly’s fourth release this year, Yezhu Kadal Yezhu Malai is directed by Ram and also stars actors Soori and Anjali.
The film centers on a chance encounter between strangers on a moving train, an ordinary man and an 8,000 year old immortal being who become unexpectedly connected. When their worlds collide, it unfolds into a journey of compassion, redemption and survival and the exploration of life’s unseen connections.
The film is slated for an October 1 theatrical release.
Preity Mukhundhan and Ashok Selvan star as a newly married couple in this romantic action entertainer. Mukhundhan plays Selvan’s wife, who hails from a wealthy family and gives up everything for him, while he promises to give her the life he promised her.
Directed by R. Kaarthikeyan, the film follows the two who find themselves in peril caused by unforeseen circumstances, testing their love and forcing them to fight against all odds to protect their relationship.
Anbil Avan will arrive in theatres on October 2.
What happens when a dating app founder and a hotshot investor fall for each other? This forms the essence of #Love, Netflix’s upcoming Tamil series starring Arjun Das and Aishwarya Lekshmi in the lead roles. Tara Krishnan (Aishwarya Lekshmi) is a dating app founder who meets Mathew Jebaraj, a big league finance guy. Will compatibility bring them together or chemistry?
Directed by Balaji Mohan and produced by Soundarya Rajinikanth, the series premieres on Netflix on October 2.
Telugu
Shashank Yeleti's Don't Trouble the Trouble is headlined by Fahadh Faasil, who plays a character named Suri, alongside child actor Ssara Palekar who plays the role of Divya. Set in Hyderabad, this fantasy drama builds on an enigmatic world in which Suri believes Divya to be an extraordinary child possessing special powers. The film is presented by SS Rajamouli and also stars actor Saurabh Sachdeva in a prominent role.
It will release in theatres on October 2.
Malayalam
Directed by Amal Sheela Thamby, Avaraachan & Sons stars Biju Menon, Sreenath Bhasi and Ganapathy in a trio as a father and his two sons. Menon plays a widower who is forced to flee Chellanum, his hometown, due to his drinking habits and unheeding lifestyle. But, as he relocates to a hill station in North Kerala in his urge to escape, he instead finds himself amidst love, unexpected friendships and redemption.
Also starring Vinay Forrt, Johny Antony and Grace Antony, the film is set for a theatrical release on October 2.
Kannada
Directed by Pavan Wadeyar, the Dr. Shivarajkumar-starrer is an action-drama touted to be a visually powerful and intense film. In its first look, which was revealed this year in April, audiences could see a silhouette of Shivarajkumar's character standing under an umbrella and against a dramatic red background, giving the film a raw, atmospheric feel.
Alongside Shivarajkumar, the film also stars an ensemble cast including Sai Kumar, Yogesh, Jayaram, Deekshith Shetty, Sanjana Anand, Sangeetha and Gopal Krishna Deshpande.
Bail will arrive in theatres on October 2.
English
Based on the bestselling novel by Colleen Hoover, Verity is a psychological thriller starring Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett in lead roles. It is directed by Michael Showalter and marks his second collaboration with Hathaway since The Idea Of You (2024).
Verity follows Lowen Ashleigh (Johnson) a struggling writer who moves to the lone Crawford estate to ghostwrite for renowned author Verity Crawford (Hathaway). After uncovering what seems to be Verity's unsettling autobiographical notes, she grapples with the dark and twisted confessions about Jeremy (Josh Hartnett), her husband. As she becomes increasingly tangled in this mystery, she also becomes obsessively interested, finding herself struggling to discern between fiction and reality, and manipulation and desire.
The film marks Hathaway’s fifth project this year and will arrive in theatres on October 2.
Alejandro González Iñárritu brings together a stellar ensemble to the screen for his upcoming comedy Digger.
Starring Tom Cruise, Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller and Michael Stuhlbarg, Digger centers on the most powerful man in the world, Digger Rockwell (Cruise) on a mission to prove he is the true savior of humanity before he wreaks disaster which destroys everything. Ahmed plays the role of Dr. Ganesh — a scientist and the President’s assistant, and one of the few men Digger trusts.
Marking the Mexican filmmaker’s third English film since Grams in 2003 and Birdman in 2014, Digger is slated for a theatrical release on October 2.
