Yash Raj Films is venturing into horror for the first time with a feature directed by Rocket Boys creator Abhay Pannu, starring Varun Dhawan in the lead. Strategically backed by Akshaye Widhani, the film marks Pannu’s theatrical debut and Dhawan’s return to the banner after Sui Dhaaga, with a planned 2027 theatrical release that broadens YRF’s genre slate.
Taking a turn away from classic romances, dramas and high octane actions, YRF is now entering a new and exciting territory with its first-ever horror movie. Helmed by feature film director Abhay Pannu, the film will star Varun Dhawan in the lead role.
Dhawan's last collaboration with the banner was Sui Dhaaga in 2018. A source close to the project said that, "Varun has come on board as the lead for YRF’s first horror film."
The source also said that, "Yash Raj Films (YRF) is entering the horror genre for the first time with a feature film directed by Abhay Pannu, strategically championed by Akshaye Widhani, and now headlined by Varun Dhawan as the lead. YRF have made films across almost every genre except horror. Come 2027, and the banner will finally step into this genre."
The film marks Pannu's theatrical directorial debut after receiving widespread praise for his critically acclaimed biographical drama series Rocket Boys (2022). It further solidifies YRF's commitment to expanding its genre slate and supporting a new generation of filmmakers.
YRF is next also set to co-produce Sameer Saxena's upcoming film Mupapa, and Ali Abbas Zafar's next starring Sharvari, Vedang Rain and Bobby Deol.
Dhawan most recently appeared in Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai alongside Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde, and is also expected to be seen in Bhediya 2.
Pannu's film is set for a theatrical release in 2027.
