Visiting The Sets of 'Koffee With Karan': A Stroll Down Memory Lane

As Karan Johar’s era-defining talk show comes to a close, we look back at the moments that made it.

Being told that one has an opportunity to visit the set of the last season of Koffee with Karan is like being told that one has the opportunity to go to India’s very first McDonalds, for the first and last time. It is like being told that you can see your childhood photo album but once you close it, it’s gone forever. It is like being told that you can you go to the house you grew up in but after that, the gates close forever. It is like being told... you get the point.

For people that grew up watching cable TV and surprisingly for those that grew up in the iPad era, Koffee with Karan isn’t just a show. It’s more a feeling. One that is equal parts endearing, chaotic, hilarious and bizarre. It has been a way of keeping score of Bollywood, and sometimes of growing up with it.

The 'Koffee With Karan' set

The first thing one sees is the Koffee couch... the size of which has grown exponentially since the show’s first season. It is difficult to look at it without mentally filling the seats with the celebrities who have occupied them over the years, but it is even harder not to think of the iconic moments that the Koffee couch is responsible for.

It is a couch that has perhaps seen more drama than an Ekta Kapoor serial. Friendships, rivalries, relationship revelations all unravelled on national television as Karan lobbed questions that would probably get all of us thrown out of our groups. From Alia Bhatt confusing the President of India to Kareena Kapoor Khan’s iconic accent exchange with Priyanka Chopra. From Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor choosing violence to Kangana Ranaut introducing the word ‘nepotism’ to India’s vocabulary. From Salman Khan’s unforgettable virginity confession to Shah Rukh Khan being Shah Rukh Khan. Preity Zinta’s ‘underwater or what’ moment to Akshay Kumar hijacking the show by flipping the script on Karan.

This show is Bollywood's group chat and the whole country is a part of it.

Standing on the set reminded me that, since 2004, Koffee with Karan has shaped how we consume celebrity culture. It gave us memes before memes became a career, one-liners that became part of our vocabulary, and conversations that went way beyond Bollywood gossip. And now, with the final season, we're saying goodbye to more than a show. We're saying goodbye to a ritual, the anticipation, the hot takes, the Monday-morning debriefs, and watching our favourite stars let their guard down.

The episodes will remain, the memes will keep circulating, and the one-liners will continue to find their way into our conversations. But there is something special about having stood where it all happened, knowing that this officially is the last cup of Koffee, whether we like it or not.
