Ananya Shakar sits down with director Abhinay Deo and actor Imran Khan at the Nilaya Monsoon Film Festival to mark 15 years of Delhi Belly, the A-rated, expletive-laden 2011 caper that nobody expected to release, let alone become one of Indian cinema's most enduring cult classics. Abhinay recounts the disastrous first rough-cut screening where a room full of Aamir Khan's family and associates declared the film a disaster, a leading filmmaker told him his career was over before it began, and Aamir still chose to release the film exactly as it was made. The two look back on the obscenity cases that took nine years to resolve, Akshat Verma's script that went through over a decade and multiple drafts, the year and a half of re-editing that changed everything without a single new shot, and the accidental casting of Kunaal Roy Kapur, who only walked into the audition because he had accompanied his brother Aditya Roy Kapur. Imran remembers the two lines of dialogue that made him certain he had to be in the film, the workshops where the cast had to unlearn performative English, shooting Delhi's streets in a burqa while 200 fans waited outside the van, and the Ram Sampath songs that were all recorded after the film was shot. Abhinay reveals how he turned action director mid-shoot after his stunt coordinator was felled by an actual Delhi belly, and the duo debate why no film like it has been attempted since. The session also features Imran announcing his return to acting after ten years with the Netflix romantic comedy Adhure Hum Adhure Tum, a discussion on the prospects of Delhi Belly 2, and an audience Q&A on censorship, influences, and the craft of comedy.
