Aamir Khan will be the first recipient of the RK Laxman Award for Excellence, a new honour established to celebrate the late cartoonist’s creative legacy.
Actor and filmmaker Aamir Khan will be honoured with the first-ever RK Laxman Award for Excellence, an award introduced in memory of the legendary cartoonist whose work has left an indelible mark on Indian art and culture.
The award, instituted by the RK Laxman family, aims to recognise outstanding contributions to creativity and storytelling. The inaugural ceremony will take place on November 23, 2025, at the MCA Cricket Stadium in Pune, where Aamir Khan will be formally presented with the honour.
The evening will also feature a live performance by Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman, who is set to perform a special concert as part of the tribute. The event will celebrate Laxman’s artistic legacy through music, memories, and reflections on his contribution to Indian society.
Speaking about the occasion, Usha Laxman, the late artist’s daughter-in-law, said the family envisioned the award and ceremony as a heartfelt homage to the beloved cartoonist. She shared that honouring Aamir Khan was their way of celebrating Laxman’s spirit of creative excellence. Usha added that this tribute not only acknowledges Laxman’s influence as a cultural figure but also recognises his ability to shape public imagination through his art.
R.K. Laxman, one of India’s most celebrated cartoonists, was best known for creating The Common Man, the enduring symbol of everyday Indian life featured in his long-running cartoon strip You Said It. His work captured the irony, humour, and struggles of ordinary citizens with sharp social commentary. Laxman also illustrated Malgudi Days, the classic television series based on the stories of his brother R.K. Narayan.
Throughout his prolific career, Laxman received numerous honours, including the Padma Bhushan, the Padma Vibhushan, and an honorary doctorate from the University of Mysore.
Presenting the inaugural RK Laxman Award to Aamir Khan marks a symbolic bridge between two creative legacies — Laxman’s incisive visual storytelling and Aamir’s long-standing commitment to meaningful, socially conscious cinema.
