At a recent roundtable with actors from the streaming world, host and critic Suchin Mehrotra asked for their take on the industry’s shifting landscape, especially in light of shows being cancelled. The consensus was clear: everyone was waiting for the dust to settle and for things to return to a more stable state.

Sonakshi Sinha shared: “It should concern all of us. We’re in a metamorphosis phase right now. I think we all just need to hang in there.”

Aditi Rao Hydari said that she had not signed anything after the Sanjay Leela Bhansali-directed Netflix series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, but added that a kind of “recalibration” was happening.

“Earlier, we would get a concrete plan, ready to begin. Right now, things are being pulled together, but nothing is concrete. It’s a phase, and it will definitely settle,” added Sinha.

Ali Fazal pointed to the tension between theatres and studios: “There’s a big churning happening. Once that settles, people will need to return to theatres…”

Rao Hydari also expressed frustration over the industry's imbalance, saying, “Sometimes there’s a misuse of what platforms offer. When that happens, it causes distrust in the process. It’s about personal responsibility, and I hope that we get back on track. We all want to do exciting work.”

Fazal, though, believes that the issue is intertwined with the theatrical experience. “It goes hand in hand. One feeds the other. We have to find that balance. The finance model is shaky for both sides.”

Recalling that it had been one phase of change after another, Roshan Mathew came to the realisation that adaptation was constant. “The market is constantly evolving based on consumer preferences, and we have to keep up with that. We'll keep trying new formulas and approaches.”

Rao Hydari, however, remained confident in creativity’s resilience, while Sinha agreed with the notion that there was increasing pressure on actors to understand the economics of the business. “I just want to be on set, I don’t want to think about anything else. If it were up to me, I’d wake up, go to set, and come back home,” she said. “But there’s so much else you have to do. It can dilute what you’re trying to achieve. It’s tough, but that’s life.”

Anjali Anand summed it up: “You’ve got to adapt.”
