Payal Kapadia’s Grand Prix-winning All We Imagine As Light missed out on the BAFTA for Best Film Not in the English Language, with the honour going to Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Perez.

All We Imagine As Light focuses on the bond between two Malayali nurses navigating life and friendship in Mumbai. The Malayalam-Hindi film made history in 2024 as the first Indian film to win the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival.

Audiard’s Emilia Perez tells the story of four women in Mexico, with cartel leader Emilia (Karla Sofia Gascón) enlisting lawyer Rita (Zoe Saldaña) to help stage her death, allowing her to live as her authentic self. Saldaña, who played the film’s second lead, took home the award for Best Supporting Actress.

The ceremony, hosted by David Tennant at London’s Royal Festival Hall, saw Conclave, led by Ralph Fiennes, win Best Film and Best British Film. The Edward Berger-directed Vatican thriller also claimed trophies for Best Adapted Screenplay and Editing.

Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist was another big winner, securing Best Director for Corbet and Best Actor for Adrien Brody. The film also won awards for Cinematography and Score.

Mikey Madison received the Best Leading Actress BAFTA for Anora, which also won the Casting award for Sean Baker and Samantha Quan.

Kieran Culkin won Best Supporting Actor for A Real Pain, with writer-director Jesse Eisenberg taking home Best Original Screenplay.

Conclave had earlier led the nominations with 12, followed by Emilia Perez with 11 and The Brutalist with 9. Rich Peppiatt’s Kneecap set a BAFTA record with six nominations for a debut filmmaker, ultimately winning one, Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer.

Notably absent from the ceremony was Emilia Perez star Karla Sofía Gascón, who was phased out of the film’s awards campaign following her controversial tweets. Gascón, the first trans actor to receive an Oscar nomination, issued an apology, but tensions reportedly arose with Netflix over the impact on the film’s Oscar prospects.
