BTS Documentary ‘BTS: The Return’ to Chronicle Band’s Reunion After Military Hiatus
Directed by Bao Nguyen, the feature-length film follows the global pop group as they reunite in Los Angeles and begin work on new music after completing South Korea’s mandatory military service.
A new documentary will trace the reunion of the global pop group BTS following their extended hiatus for military service. Titled BTS: The Return, the feature-length film will premiere on Netflix on 27 March, offering an inside look at the group’s first steps back into the studio together.
Directed by Bao Nguyen, whose previous work includes the documentaries The Stringer and The Greatest Night in Pop, the film follows the seven members of the South Korean group as they regroup in Los Angeles after completing South Korea’s mandatory military service. Their return marks the first time in several years that the band has been able to work together without interruption.
The documentary is produced by This Machine alongside HYBE, the entertainment company behind BTS’s rise from a small label act to one of the most influential pop groups in the world. Since debuting in 2013, the group has built a vast global fanbase and helped reshape the international reach of Korean pop music.
BTS: The Return promises a largely observational approach. Cameras follow the members as they reconnect in the studio, test new musical directions and revisit a shared creative dynamic that has evolved during their time apart. The film also reflects on the arc of their career, tracing how seven young performers from South Korea became one of the defining pop phenomena of the past decade.
For the band, the reunion comes with a mixture of anticipation and uncertainty. The film captures conversations about how to begin again as a group, and how to carry forward the legacy of their earlier work without simply repeating it. Moments of rehearsal and songwriting sit alongside more intimate exchanges between the members, revealing both the strain and the camaraderie that have defined their partnership.
The project will culminate in the creation of new music that the film frames as the beginning of the group’s next chapter.
