Written and directed by Mehran Amrohi, 'Chidiya' follows two brothers in a Mumbai chawl who turn a junkyard into a playground. The film opens in theaters on May 30.
The trailer for Chidiya, a Hindi-language drama centered on childhood imagination and communal resilience, was released yesterday. Written and directed by Mehran Amrohi, the film tells the story of two young brothers, Shanu and Bua, who grow up in a crowded chawl in Mumbai. When they set out to transform a derelict junkyard into a badminton court, their modest dream unexpectedly galvanizes their neighborhood.
The film stars Vinay Pathak, Amruta Subhash, Inaamulhaq, and child actors Svar Kamble and Ayush Pathak. It is produced by Faqhrul Husaini under the Smiley Films banner and distributed by Reliance Entertainment. Music is composed by Shailendra Barve.
“Chidiya is a love letter to childhood resilience,” Amrohi said in a statement. “It’s about finding joy in scarcity, and how children’s imagination turns even the smallest spaces into worlds of their own. Shanu and Bua’s dream is simple — but it’s everything to them.” Subhash described the project as one that required “no artifice, no acting tricks — just truth.”
The film had its world premiere at the Zlín International Film Festival, the world’s largest children’s film event, and has since been screened at several global platforms, including the South Asia International Film Festival in New York and the Cinekid Screening Club in Amsterdam. It won accolades for Best Film and Best Debut Director.
Chidiya will be released in select Indian theaters on May 30, 2025.
