The duo behind 'Karnan' return with a new film, this time produced by Vels Film International, promising another emotionally powerful and socially resonant drama.
In a much-anticipated reunion, one of Tamil cinema’s powerhouse duos — actor Dhanush and filmmaker Mari Selvaraj — are collaborating once again, this time for a project tentatively titled D56. The announcement was made on April 9, timed to coincide with the fourth anniversary of their critically-acclaimed 2021 film Karnan.
While early reports in 2023 had suggested that Dhanush’s Wunderbar Films would back the venture, it’s now confirmed that D56 will be produced by Ishari K Ganesh under the banner of Vels Film International. To mark the occasion, the makers released a striking poster featuring a sword crowned with a skull-shaped hilt and the tagline: “Roots begin in a great war.”
Taking to social media, Mari shared his excitement: “Overwhelmed to celebrate the 4th year of a journey forged by Karnan's Sword! Thanks to everyone who celebrated and supported Karnan throughout the years!!" He added, "Also, I am exhilarated to say that my next project is once again with my dearest @dhanushkraja sir! This has been soaking in my mind for quite sometime now and I am very excited to be joining hands with him once again! This is my first with @ishariKganesh sir and I can't be any happier! This is going to be a thrilling experience indeed!"
While further details about the cast and crew remain under wraps, D56 already carries the weight of high expectations. Their previous collaboration, Karnan, was an intense rural drama that explored themes of caste oppression and systemic violence. The film was widely praised for its powerful performances and Mari’s unique directorial voice, further cementing Dhanush’s standing as a performer who thrives on socially resonant roles.
Dhanush, who was last seen in Raayan, has a packed slate ahead. His upcoming projects include Kuberaa (his 51st film) directed by Sekhar Kammula, his next directorial Idli Kadai, and Aanand L Rai’s Tere Ishq Mein. Mari Selvaraj, whose most recent release was Vaazhai, is currently also working on Bison: Kaalamaadan, starring Dhruv Vikram.
With D56, the Dhanush-Mari Selvaraj combination promises to deliver yet another film rooted in emotion, resistance and social commentary — a formula that made Karnan both a critical and commercial success.
