First-time director Avinash Prakash’s bildungsroman Naangal, about the painful growing-up years of three young boys, will hit the screens across South India on December 12. The Tamil film will be presented this time by master filmmaker Ram, who had directed this year’s hit children’s drama Parantho Po, apart from other classics like Taramani and Tamil MA. The director has partnered with the film because he felt the need to push out good content that needed to be watched by a larger audience.

The film was released earlier on April 18 and was pulled out of theatres at the last minute due to limited screenings.  Speaking to Cinema Express about the release, Avinash Prakash is quoted to have thanked the film’s producer for holding onto the film instead of selling it to OTT because he had believed in the film and its need to be watched on the big screen. Naangal can be labelled an independent film, an arthouse film, or a parallel film. But, for me, what matters is what it means to the audience,” Avinash told the publication in an interview. During promotions of Paranthu Po, director Ram had mentioned Naangal as one of his favourite Tamil films of the year.

The film details the lives of three boys who grow up alone in a big mansion in Ooty, as their alcoholic father's rare visits bring chaos and pain into their lives.
