Set in 1950s Madras, the Dulquer Salmaan and Samuthirakani starrer explores the shifting power between a filmmaker and his protégé amid a changing world of cinema.
Dulquer Salmaan’s upcoming Tamil-Telugu bilingual Kaantha will be released in theatres across the world on November 14. The film is directed by Selvamani Selvaraj, known for the docu-series The Hunt for Veerappan, and is produced by Dulquer’s Wayfarer Films in collaboration with Rana Daggubati’s Spirit Media.
Set in the vibrant yet turbulent world of 1950s Madras, Kaantha follows the creative and emotional tension between a filmmaker and his protégé. As the two collaborate on a new film, their friendship begins to fracture under the weight of ego, vision, and artistic conflict. The story unfolds against the backdrop of a society undergoing change, where cinema itself becomes a reflection of ambition and identity.
The film stars Dulquer Salmaan, Samuthirakani, and Bhagyashri Borse. A newly released poster featuring the trio captures the retro mood, echoing the aesthetic of the era it portrays. The teaser, which dropped on Dulquer’s birthday in July, hinted at a film within a film narrative centred around a horror project titled Saantha.
The film’s technical crew brings together some notable names from across industries. Jhanu Chanthar composes the music, while Dani Sanchez Lopez captures the film with his distinctive visual style. Ramalingam helms the production design, Lewellyn Anthony Gonsalves edits the film, and Thamizh Prabha contributes to the screenplay.
Kaantha was initially slated for a September release but was postponed to avoid a clash with Lokah: Chapter 1 – Chandra. Announcing the new date on social media, the makers wrote, “Diwali just got a whole lot more explosive! Kaantha will be lighting up theatres worldwide from November 14.”
The film marks another addition to Dulquer Salmaan’s expanding body of work across languages. He recently produced and appeared in Lokah, starring Kalyani Priyadarshan and Naslen, under his banner Wayfarer Films. Following Kaantha, he will feature in the Telugu romantic drama Aakasamlo Oka Tara and the Malayalam film I’m Game, both currently in different stages of production.
