Superstar Aamir Khan has revealed how singer-composer Arijit Singh went on to work on multiple songs in his upcoming production, Ek Din, and reflected on the singer’s decision to quit playback singing.

Earlier this year, Arijit—whose voice became synonymous with modern longing—announced his departure from playback singing, saying he will no longer take on new assignments as a film vocalist.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter India about the title track of Ek Din, Aamir mentioned how, instead of asking Arijit to travel, he chose to go to the singer’s hometown, Jiaganj — in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal — with director Sunil Pandey and music composer Ram Sampath so they could work more closely on the songs in a setting he was comfortable in.

“When we went there, it was such an amazing experience” said Aamir while talking about Arijit’s passion for his craft. Aamir further mentioned how Arijit approaches singing as a storyteller. “With his singing, he is also telling a story  — he is not just singing,” the actor added.

Aamir said the singer is deeply invested in his craft and allows a song to evolve beyond its first take. “He works really hard. He really throws himself in."

When asked if he had tried convincing Arijit to return to playback singing, Aamir said he was not at liberty to share the details regarding Arijit’s reasons behind the exit but mentioned,  “I am hoping at some point he will reconsider."

Addressing fans in a series of tweets, Singh had stressed that the move was not impulsive but something that he’d been contemplating for a while. “There is not one reason behind this, there are several reasons plus I have been trying to do this since a long time. Finally I have gathered the right courage,” he had explained.

Starring Junaid Khan and Sai Pallavi, Ek Din has been produced by Mansoor Khan, Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit. Cinematography has been done by Manoj Lobo and edit is being handled by Ballu Saluja. The film, a remake of the 2016 Thai feature One Day, marks the directorial debut of Sunil Pandey and is set to release on May 1.
