Exclusive | Director C. Prem Kumar Confirms '96' Sequel
The original romantic-drama, that released in 2018, starred actors Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha
Filmmaker C. Prem Kumar has confirmed that he's in the process of finishing the script of the sequel to his 2018 blockbuster, the romantic-drama 96.
Starring Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha, the Tamil film followed the reunion of two former school classmates 22 years since they graduated, over one night of talking, reminiscing and revoking feelings of unrequited love. 96 was a massive success, and also led to remakes in Kannada as 99 (2019) and Telugu as Jaanu (2020).
"Currently, I'm writing the sequel to 96. I've already written about three-fourths of the script. I'm just continuing the writing process," confirmed Prem Kumar during a roundtable with The Hollywood Reporter India.
Responding to a question on audiences having many sleepless nights wondering why Ram and Jaanu did not get together after the first film, he replied, "Something amazing happened; an old lady came up to me randomly, and asked me to come closer. I thought she was going to appreciate the film or say something nice. Instead, she gave me a slap. She said, 'Why did you do this?' And then, she kissed me on the cheek.”
Is there hope for the hopeless romantics? “Yes, there is. I'm writing it," he grinned.
Prem Kumar's most recent film was the 2024 drama Meiyazhagan, which starred actors Karthi and Arvind Swamy.
