Where is the prince of Mirzapur heading next? A new kingdom. Fresh off the roaring box-office triumph of Mirzapur: The Movie, Divyenndu has confirmed his next venture — and it sees him stepping into historical terrain.
Speaking exclusively with The Hollywood Reporter India, the actor opened up about being attached to an intriguing period project without giving away too much.
"My next project is kind of a period film, but it's set in a period not so far back in time. I will be starting that very soon! I can't reveal much right now, but it's incredibly interesting. I'm thrilled to start it. As soon as I wrap that up, I’ll be starting Madgaon Express 2," he reveals.
Madgaon Express was Kunal Kemmu's breakout 2024 directorial debut, which paired Divyenndu alongside Pratik Gandhi and Avinash Tiwary in a relentless laugh riot. The film is now gearing up for its sequel, which is expected to go on floors early next year, around February or March.
"There's a critical location in the script that needs to be locked down and agreed upon. Once that’s sorted, we’re good to go. Kunal already has a fantastic draft ready. He gave us a narration, and it was absolutely hilarious. Just a few minor tweaks are happening, but we are fully loaded," Divyenndu reveals.
Currently, the actor is riding high on the theatrical juggernaut that is Mirzapur: The Movie, which recently breached the coveted ₹300 crore mark at the worldwide box-office.
Transitioning a hit streaming franchise from Prime Video into a tentpole theatrical event was deemed a high-stakes gamble by everyone.
When asked if a second theatrical installment of Mirzapur is now on the cards, Divyenndu said, "Everyone wants it to happen! As fans of Mirzapur ourselves, we want it too. When you hit numbers like these, the makers also feel there is scope to go again. But, it might take its own time in terms of cracking the story, getting in characters, taking the story forward so that people don't feel it's a cash cow. It has to be justified why we are taking the story forward. But yes, there is definitely chatter of coming up with a Mirzapur movie sequel," he added.
