Vir Das began the year making audiences laugh; now he is ready to pivot to horror. The actor, comedian, and filmmaker has officially unveiled the ensemble cast for his upcoming directorial project Baara Number, a found-footage psychological horror film that unites a highly versatile slate of performers.
Baara Number marks Das' next directorial following his recent spy comedy Happy Patel, which was backed by Aamir Khan.
The film will feature Das alongside Sheeba Chaddha, Arunoday Singh, Ahsaas Channa, Atul Kulkarni, Niharika Lyra Dutt, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Suhail Nayyar, Puja Sarup, and Naveen Kaushik. Filmmaker Kavi Shastri, who co-directed Happy Patel, has also boarded the project as its Creative Producer.
"What made this project especially exciting was bringing together a group of actors whose work I’ve admired for years," Das said about the ensemble.
"Sheeba, Atul, Arunoday, Shriya, Ahsaas, Niharika, Suhail and Naveen each bring a distinct energy, intelligence and authenticity to the film. Horror works best when audiences believe every moment is real, and this ensemble has elevated the material beyond anything I imagined when we first started writing it.”
Happy Patel marked the directorial debut of Das, who also starred in the film alongside Mithila Palkar, Sharib Hashmi, Mona Kapoor and Srushti Tawade. The delightful comedy feature, which released theatrically in January this year, also featured Aamir Khan and Imran Khan in a special appearances.
Das’ transition into horror with Baara Number aligns with a broader, fascinating shift in the global theatrical landscape. The box office is currently seeing significant disruption from comedian-turned-filmmaker Curry Barker’s psychological horror sensation Obsession, underscoring that creators rooted in comedy can also be uniquely equipped to master the mechanics of suspense and tension.
