The Indian Film and Television Producers Council (IFTPC) has issued a strong statement against a section of social media influencers, claiming that they deliberately post negative reviews to discredit a film in an attempt to extort money from producers. The association, which represents the interests of over 375 leading film and television producers in India, said it is seeking legal opinion to "protect producers" against this "extortion".

In a letter issued on Monday evening, the association said they have been observing "an alarming trend" of certain social media influencers who engage in "predatory practices by threatening to release malicious and disparaging reviews or reaction videos of films, series, and other audiovisual content, coupled with demands for payment from producers."

"It was observed that if these demands are not met, these influencers threaten to launch targeted campaigns designed to deliberately sabotage a project's reception and commercial viability," the letter read.

The producers' body also stated that it is not against the freedom of speech of influencers and genuinely welcome constructive criticism, but the acts of "extortion" by "some of these unscrupulous individuals go far beyond the purview of legitimate reviewing"

"They are causing a grave threat to the creative and economic health of the Indian film and entertainment industry. Therefore, the IFTPC has decided to seek opinions from top-tier legal counsels to explore all available legal remedies under both civil and criminal laws to bring a swift and decisive end to these extortionate practices," the letter read.

Though the IFTPC has issued the strongly-worded letter now, the industry has been talking about the menace of paid reviews and even paid negative campaign for a long time. Many within the industry have attempted to put an end to the practice by not paying some of these influencers, but so far, there have been no concentrated, collective efforts.
