Journalist-turned-filmmaker Pritish Nandy, known for producing movies like Kaante (2002), Jhankaar Beats (2003), Chameli (2003), and Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi (2003), passed away on Wednesday. He was 73.
Nandy, who was also a celebrated painter and poet, was honoured with the Padma Shri for his contribution to literature in 1977. He breathed his last following a cardiac arrest at his residence in Mumbai.

Actor Anupam Kher was among the first ones who confirmed the death of Nandy. The actor penned an emotional note on X, writing, "Deeply saddened and shocked to know about the demise of one of my dearest and closest friends Pritish Nandy! Amazing poet, writer, filmmaker, and a brave and unique editor/journalist. He was my support system and a great source of strength in my initial days in Mumbai (sic)."
The movie veteran had worked as a journalist with the Times of India in the 1980s and later went on to start his production house Pritish Nandy Communications in 1993.
Under his production company, Nandy backed young filmmaking voices with movies like Sur, Jhankaar Beats, and Pyaar Ke Side Effects among others. Nandy also produced streaming shows like Four More Shots Please! and Modern Love Mumbai.

Four More Shots Please! actor Sayani Gupta also took to Instagram and penned a long note for the producer, calling him "an absolute stalwart, a visionary." She wrote, "A rock star feminist who has created some of the most iconic women characters for cinema..."
In his career of over four decades, Nandy also authored 40 books of poetry in English and was also the recipient of the KarmaVeer Puraskaar in 2008 and the International Humanitarian Award in 2012, among others.
