The filmmaker earned two nominations for Best Director (Motion Picture) and Best Foreign Film at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards.
Director Payal Kapadia has etched her name in history as the first Indian filmmaker to receive a Golden Globes nomination for Best Director - Motion Picture. Nominated alongside Jacques Audiard for Emilia Pérez, Sean Baker for Anora, Brady Corbet for The Brutalist, Coralie Fargeat for The Substance and Edward Berger for Conclave, it was truly a milestone for Indian cinema. All We Imagine As Light was also nominated for Best Motion Picture in a Non-English Language.
“I am honored that our film is nominated in the Best Director and Best Motion Picture - Non English Language categories,” said Kapadia in a statement. “My deepest gratitude to the Golden Globes voters for this recognition. This is a celebration of everyone who worked so passionately on the film. From those who were there in the beginning when I was conceiving of the concept, through production with our amazing cast and crew, and now everyone who is bringing the film to audiences, like Sideshow and Janus Films our US distributor.”
She continued, “This film is so close to my heart and to see it connect with so many people is beyond what I could have hoped for. I am thrilled that this story is set in Mumbai — the city that I am from — about women grappling with the nuances of life and society is finding recognition across the world.” She concluded her statement by asking audiences across the world to watch the film in cinemas near them.
The film earned the nomination of Best Motion Picture in a Non-English Language alongside Emilia Pérez, The Girl with the Needle, I’m Still Here, The Seed of the Sacred Fig and Vermiglio.
Meanwhile, Jacques Audiard’s musical Emilia Pérez leads the nominations for the Golden Globes with 10 nods.
A Malayalam-Hindi film set in Mumbai, All We Imagine As Light follows the lives of three women (Starring Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha and Chhaya Kadam) and their friendship. After premiering at The Cannes Film Festival, where it won the The Grand Prix, it was named the Best International Film by New York Film Critics Circle and won an award in the same category at the Gotham Awards. Kapadia’s film also took first place in Sight and Sound magazine's annual list of 50 best movies of the year.
A graduate from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Kapadia has also directed the acclaimed short film Afternoon Clouds and the docu-feature A Night of Knowing Nothing.
Although Kiran Rao's Laapata Ladies has been chosen as India's official entry for the Academy Awards in the International Feature Film category, All We Imagine As Light is still highly anticipated to secure nominations in the general categories at the Oscars.
