After shutting down a sexist question at a Chennai press meet, Gouri Kishan finds strong support from across the film industry.
At a recent press conference in Chennai for her new film Others, actor Gouri Kishan found herself fielding a question that had nothing to do with her performance. When a journalist asked her co-star Aditya Madhavan if it was “difficult to lift her because of her weight,” Gouri immediately intervened, calling out the remark as “irrelevant and disrespectful.”
In a calm but firm response that quickly went viral, she said in Tamil, “How does my weight concern you? How is that relevant to the film? My weight is my choice, it does not define my talent.” As the journalist tried to defend his question, Gouri continued, “Every woman has a different body type. Stop normalising body-shaming. I have worked hard on character driven films. I don’t need your validation.” When she was interrupted, she added, “I have a point to make here, and everyone is silencing me.”
The exchange sparked immediate reactions across the Tamil film industry. Filmmaker Pa Ranjith praised her courage, writing, “More power to you, @Gourayy. The fact that female actors still face such questions shows how far we have to go.”
Actor-politician Khushbu Sundar called the question “shameful,” adding, “How much a woman weighs is nobody’s business. Kudos to Gouri for standing her ground.” Actor Kavin also voiced support, saying, “Inside and out, you’re beautiful and inspiring.”
Aditya Madhavan later apologised for not stepping in, explaining, “My silence didn’t mean I approve of it. I froze because it was my debut and it caught me off guard. I wish I’d spoken sooner. She didn’t deserve that, no one does.”
The Chennai Press Club released a statement condemning the incident, clarifying that the individual was a “YouTuber” and not a journalist. “Mocking a woman over her physical appearance during a professional forum is unethical and indecent,” the statement read, while applauding Gouri for her composure. The South Indian Artistes’ Association also issued a statement of solidarity, pledging to prevent such incidents in the future.
Following the backlash, Gouri said, “I haven’t been asked one question about my performance, only about my body. Would you ask a male actor the same?”
Others released in theatres on November 7, with her next film Love Insurance Kompany set for December 18.
