At the press meet of Vijay Sethupathi and Nithya Menen’s upcoming drama Thalaivan Thalaivii on Monday, the film’s director Pandiraaj spoke at length about an earlier misunderstanding between him and the film’s star. He said there were some issues between them and that he had mentally decided to never work with Sethupathi. The miscommunication only kept getting bigger and it was during a party at director Mysskin’s house that their issue was sorted out.

During his speech, Pandiraaj said, “At Mysskin’s birthday party, I was initially hesitant to go up to Vijay Sethupathi and speak to him due to our previous issues. But it was he who came up to me and said, 'Let’s make a movie together' ending the conflict between us.”

In response, Vijay Sethupathi said that the reason why they spoke about their issue and on how it was eventually sorted out was to, “explain how fights never last for long. Despite our previous disagreements, we were able to forget that and come together to create something beautiful like Thalaivan Thalaivii.”

The director also claimed that the film was based on a real-life couple and an event he across during a visit to his family deity in his village. “More than translating exactly what I saw, it is a more positive take that began with a question of 'Wouldn’t it have been nice had this happened to these two characters?'"

Thalaivan Thalaivii is the director’s 11th film. He also stated that Sethupathi’s character of 'Akasaveeran’ does not have a traditional character arc and that it would not be possible for many actors to pull it off. The director’s last film was Suriya’s Etharkkum Thunindhavan which released three years ago. The film released mixed reviews from critics. His first film Pasanga (2008) had won the National Award for Best Screenplay, apart from winning the Best Feature Film in Tamil Award.

Thalaivan Thalaivii is expected to release on July 25 and is produced by Sathya Jyothi Films. The film's music is by Santhosh Narayanan.
