It took them 25 years, but the OGs are back. Filmmaker Priyadarshan is set to direct the third instalment of his cult comedy film Hera Pheri, with the original trio of actors Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty and Paresh Rawal.

While Priyadarshan had directed the 2000 comedy, its sequel in 2006 was helmed by Neeraj Vora, who was also the writer of Hera Pheri.

The announcement of Hera Pheri 3 was made on the filmmaker's birthday with a quirky exchange on social media. Akshay Kumar, who is currently working with Priyadarshan in the horror-comedy Bhoot Bangla, took to X to wish the filmmaker.

Responding to Kumar, the 68-year-old filmmaker wrote, "Thank you so much for your wishes Akshay . In return I would like to give you a gift, I’m willing to do Hera Pheri 3, Are you ready?" and tagged the three actors. Akshay was the first to respond, tweeting that the announcement of Hera Pheri 3 was the "best gift" of his life.

"Hera Pheri aur pooch pooch!!! Let's do this #HeraPheri3," Shetty tweeted, followed by Rawal, who welcomed the filmmaker to the third part of the franchise.

"Dear Priyanji You are the Mother who brought this divine bundle of joy in this world! Thanks once again for taking custody of this ever smiling baby! Welcome sir and make the world happy again" Rawal tweeted.

Hera Pheri 3 will be produced by Firoz Nadiadwala, known for backing movies like Awara Paagal Deewana (2002), Phir Hera Pheri (2006), and Welcome (2007).

Though not commercially successful at the time, Hera Pheri went on to garner a cult following over the years, with the audience appreciating the film's humour and the chemistry between the three characters, Raju, Shyam and Baburao Ganpatrao Apte, played by Kumar, Shetty and Rawal, respectively.

Hera Pheri also starred Tabu, Asrani, Om Puri and Gulshan Grover among others.
