According to reports, the veteran composer stated that he feels 'cheated by music companies'.
Legendary music composer Ilaiyaraaja has approached the Madras High Court in a copyright infringement case involving his songs in Pradeep Ranganathan-starrer film Dude. The composer moved the HC over the use of his songs in films without authorisation.
According to a report in Live Law, the veteran composer stated that he feels "cheated by music companies" and filed a plea against Sony Music.
The submission was made before Justice N Senthilkumar. This came after the court had previously instructed the music company to furnish daily revenue statements from the streaming of Ilaiyaraaja's songs. Reports stated that a portion of the song 'Karutha Machan' from the 1991 film Pudhu Nellu Pudhu Naathu was used in Dude.
Appearing for Ilaiyaraaja, senior advocate S Prabakaran argued that despite the pendency of the case, the "respondent continued to use his songs unauthorisedly".
Prabakaran noted that two songs of Ilaiyaraaja were used in the recent Tamil Dude and said how the film had grossed over ₹75 crore in three days.
The judge observed that the argument hadn't been properly submitted in an affidavit, so it couldn't be taken into account, with Prabakaran countering that it was impractical for Ilaiyaraaja to file separate applications "against big labels for every movie."
"I may be a famous music composer. But I'm being cheated by these music companies. They are continuing to use my songs without any authorisation. They're distorting it, adding beats to it," Prabakaran said on behalf of Ilaiyaraaja.
Earlier this year, Ajith Kumar's Good Bad Ugly also came under legal scrutiny over the use of three Ilaiyaraaja songs in its soundtrack without proper authorisation.
Directed by Keerthiswaran, Dude also stars Mamitha Baiju, Sarathkumar, Rohini, and Hridhu Haroon. The film was released last Friday and has been performing excellently at the box-office. Dude has already grossed over ₹100 crore at the global box-office during the Deepavali holiday period.
