A report published in The Hindu on Monday, February 2, stated that the zonal officer of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), D Balamurali, declined to comment on the status of Vijay’s upcoming film Jana Nayagan, citing confidentiality. According to the report, the officer said that no information can be revealed until a certificate has been issued.

Speculation around the film’s certification has been rife on social media, with reports suggesting that the film’s producer, KVN Productions, had agreed to remove portions of the film deemed controversial. Some of these reports claimed that as much as 20 minutes of footage could be cut. However, there has been no official clarification from either the producers or the CBFC on the matter.

The Hindu report further stated that the CBFC official maintained that it was not legally permissible to divulge any details while the film was awaiting certification. He added that any official information regarding Jana Nayagan would be made available only through the board’s portal.

Jana Nayagan, positioned as Vijay’s final film before entering politics full-time, became embroiled in a legal battle after the CBFC delayed issuing its certification. KVN Productions approached the Madras High Court claiming that the Board had indicated the film would receive a U/A certificate subject to certain modifications, which were duly carried out. Yet, the certificate was not issued in time as the film was referred to the revising committee.

Fans of the actor are keenly watching developments, particularly amid speculation that the film could be readied for release ahead of the Assembly elections scheduled to take place in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry later this year. Jana Nayagan was initially slated for release on January 9, 2026, but has since been delayed. Going by current developments, the film is unlikely to release this month.

On January 27, the Madras High Court set aside a single judge’s order directing the CBFC to grant a U/A certificate to Jana Nayagan. A division bench comprising Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava and Justice G. Arul Murugan remitted the matter to the single judge for fresh consideration, holding that the “principles of natural justice” had not been followed, according to a report by Bar and Bench.
