The film co-stars Samuthirakani and Bhagyashri Borse, and is written and directed by Selvamani Selvaraj.
The teaser of the upcoming Tamil film Kaantha takes us back to the glory days of the silver screens. Dulquer Salmaan plays an enigmatic actor in Kaantha, who is part of a prestigious Tamil horror film, touted to be a first for the industry. But there is one issue. The film within this film is directed by a person he respects and challenges the most: Samuthirakani's Ayya.
The short teaser takes us through the trajectory of an actor and a filmmaker of an earlier period in the film, showing us glimpses of the ego and power struggles that often consume the two. "Celebrate the golden age of silver screens with us. Watch the first teaser of @kaanthamovie, out now on YouTube," Dulquer wrote on X, releasing the teaser.
The film, which is co-produced by Rana Daggubati, Dulquer Salmaan, Prashanth Potluri, and Jom Varghese, will be lensed by Dani Sanchez Lopez.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Daggubati said he couldn’t see anyone but Dulquer in the film. “Each story decides who its actor is in some manner, and everyone is right for a certain role. And I think if you're trying to be a producer of a film, it's about finding the best for that story. The second I heard it, I didn't see anyone but Dulquer in it. So I was like, if he was not in it, we probably wouldn't have made the film.”
Speaking about Kaantha, the actor added that Dulquer brought in a certain indie spirit. “I think Dulquer carries that so beautifully with the kind of cinema that he does and the characters he plays. He's so secure in terms of just being an actor; things don't need to go into a mainstream beat of things for him to create a successful film. So I think that way, he was probably the best guy to collaborate with.”
