Karnataka Government Caps Movie Ticket Prices at ₹200
CM Siddaramaiah also added that an OTT platform would be created by the State government to promote Kannada movies.
The Karnataka government announced on Friday that it has decided to cap movie tickets at ₹200 for all shows across theatres and multiplexes in the state. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah revealed the development while presenting the state budget for the financial year 2025-26.
Capping ticket prices at ₹200 is a significant move to make movie-watching more affordable, which would, in turn, help in registering increased footfalls in theatres.
The price ceiling may have moviegoers rejoicing, but it can face pushback from multiplex owners, as they had reportedly done in 2017 when they challenged a similar proposal in court.
During the budget, the government also announced that it plans to develop a "multiplex movie theatre complex" under Public Private Partnership (PPP). This will be built on the 2.5-acre land owned by the Karnataka Film Academy in Bengaluru.
The CM also laid out the government's plans to create an OTT platform that would promote Kannada movies. Additionally, Siddaramaiah also revealed that the state government has allocated a budget of ₹500 crore and transferred 150 acres of land to the Department of Information and Public Relations for the development of a world-class film city in Mysuru.
