In an aim to increase accessibility to cinema viewing, the Karnataka State government has announced that it will cap movie tickets at a charge of ₹200. This amount will include taxes and will apply to all movie theatres across the state. According to reports, this move was earlier announced in the March financial budget to support Kannada cinema. This charge will apply to movies releasing in all languages in the state and will not be limited to Kannada movies alone.
The Economic Times also reported that the state plans to introduce their homegrown OTT platform with an allocation of ₹3 crore to create an archive preserving Kannada movies and their cultural narratives.
Earlier, stars such as Rakshit Shetty and Rishab Shetty had noted that major OTT platforms were not showing an interest in purchasing the streaming rights of regional movies, especially from the Kannada industry.
The government notice stated that these rules, “…may be called the Karnataka Cinemas (Regulation) (Amendment) Rules, 2025. (2) They shall come into force from the date of their final publication in the Official Gazette.”
The notice also requested that all objections and suggestions be issued within 15 days. “Provided that the cost of the ticket of each show in all theatres of the state, including multiplexes for all language films, shall not exceed ₹200 (Rupees two hundred only) inclusive of entertainment tax,” the notice reads.
Ticket prices in neighbouring Tamil Nadu are capped at ₹150, but this amount does not include taxes and service charges. PVR INOX, India’s largest multiplex chain, is yet to respond to the notice. It is also unclear if the ticket cap will apply to all movie ticket types, such as 4DX, 3D, IMAX and other formats. Presently, movie tickets at Bengaluru's premium PVR Directors Cut multiplex cost upwards of ₹700 per person for the recliner seating.
