The release date of Karuppu, starring Suriya, has been officially confirmed. The action drama, directed by RJ Balaji, is scheduled to hit theatres on May 14, 2026. The announcement positions the film as a major summer offering in Tamil cinema. The film was initially hinted at a Pongal release, but was later pushed.
RJ Balaji, who has previously directed successful films such as Mookuthi Amman and Veetla Visesham, helms the project. Trisha Krishnan plays the female lead opposite Suriya, reuniting with him on-screen after nearly two decades. The supporting cast includes Swasika, Indrans, Sshivada, Anagha Maya Ravi, Yogi Babu, Natty Subramaniam, and Supreeth Reddy.
Karuppu is produced by SR Prakash Babu and SR Prabhu under the banner of Dream Warrior Pictures.
The teaser for the film was released on Suriya’s 50th birthday on July 23. It presents the project as a mass action drama and features the actor in the role of a lawyer, a profession he previously portrayed in Jai Bhim. The teaser includes brief references to some of Suriya’s earlier films. One moment appears to recreate the watermelon sequence from Ghajini. Another line, “ennakku innoru per irukku” (“I have another name too”), echoes a well-known dialogue from Baasha, originally associated with Rajinikanth. In the teaser, Suriya introduces himself as “Saravannan,” which is his given name. The teaser concludes with the phrase, “A Feast By TEAM RJB.”
Cinematography for the film is handled by GK Vishnu, known for his work on Jawan and Mersal. The screenplay has been written by Ashwin Ravichandran, Rahul Raj, T. S. Gopi Krishnan, and Karan Aravind Kumar. The film is produced by Dream Warrior Pictures.
Suriya was last seen in Retro, a romantic gangster drama directed by Karthik Subbaraj. After Karuppu, the actor will be seen headlining the romantic drama Vishwanath & Sons. This will followed by Suriya 47 (working title) with director Jithu Madhavan.
