‘Kathanar’: Jayasurya and Anushka Shetty's Film Launched
Directed by Rojin Thomas who had earlier made ‘Home’, the film is being produced by Sree Gokulam Movies.
After multiple delays and speculation about its completion, makers of actor Jayasurya’s Kathanar: The Wild Sorcerer released a first-look poster, which revealed what the actor would look like in the epic horror fantasy. The caption on the poster reads, “The One Who Steals Your Time Your Mind Your Reality.” It features Jayasurya sporting long hair and with lighter, blue eyes. He is also seen standing on the edge of a cliff, and the film is said to be set in the 9th century AD.
Actor Anushka Shetty also shared the same first-look poster in her first full-length Malayalam film. Her last release was Miss Shetty Mr. Polishetty back in 2023. Her Telugu film Ghaati is up for release soon.
As for actor Jayasurya, his previous release as a solo lead was 2022’s direct-to-OTT release Eesho, which received mixed reviews. Kathanar is said to be in the making at least since 2023, with work going on into the writing from even before. What is also to be noted is that Jayasurya will be playing the character of Kathanar, a sorcerer who has to encounter different forms of spirits and monsters along his path. And Anushka Shetty will be seen playing Kaliyankaattu Neeli, the character Kalyani Priyadhashan’s role was based on in the recently released Lokah: Chapter One Chandra.
Kathanar was also the name of a hit play and a successful television series that aired during the 2000s. Prabhu Deva is said to be playing the other lead in the film.
It is being produced by Gokulam Gopalan of Sree Gokulam Movies and is said to have a budget of ₹100 crore. Director Rojin’s previous film was released in 2021 and was titled Home. The project was initially meant to be produced by Friday Film House, which had made two films of Rojin, including Philips And The Monkey Pen with Jayasurya.
