Legendary Playback Singer P Jayachandran Passes Away

Affectionally called 'Bhava Gayakan' for his soulful singing, P Jayachandran had captivated the audience with his voice for over six decades.

Renowned playback singer P Jayachandran passed away Thursday evening in Thrissur, Kerala, at the age of 80. Popularly called Bhava Gayakan for his soulful singing, Jayachandran captivated listeners for over six decades with his work, having sung over 16,000 songs. The veteran singer breathed his last at a private hospital around 7.45 PM.

According to reports, Jayachandran was undergoing cancer treatment and was rushed to the hospital after he collapsed at his residence.

Jayachandran was a legend whose voice blurred boundaries as he sang soulful songs across languages— Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu and Hindi. He predominantly became the Malayalam industry's beloved playback singer, crooning songs of love, longing, separation, and devotion.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan took to X and mourned the loss of the "cultural icon", writing how Jayachandran's voice "transcended boundaries".

"P Jayachandran's passing marks the loss of an irreplaceable cultural icon who defined the essence of music and emotion for generations. His voice transcended boundaries, infusing music with unparalleled warmth and expression. More than just a playback singer, he was a symbol of artistic excellence, leaving behind a legacy that will resonate for years to come. Heartfelt condolences to his family and admirers," the CM posted.

Jayachandran was honoured with the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer in 1986 for the Malayalam film Sree Narayana Guru (1986) and won the Kerala State Film Award five times and Tamil Nadu State Film Award twice. He was also awarded the Kerala government's JC Daniel Award for his outstanding contribution to cinema.

The singer collaborated with the biggest of music composers, including G Devarajan, MS Baburaj, V Dakshinamoorthy, K Raghavan, MK Arjunan, MS Viswanathan, Ilayaraja, AR Rahman, Vidyasagar and M Jayachandran among others.

Jayachandran is survived by his wife Lalitha, daughter Lakshmi, and singer-son Dinanathan. The singer's mortal remains will be laid at the Sahitya Academy Hall for the public to pay their last respects on Friday, followed by his funeral on Saturday in Chendamangalam, his ancestral home.
