The director’s plans include Kaithi 2, a Rolex standalone film and then Vikram 2
In a recent interview with Anupama Chopra for The Hollywood Reporter India, filmmaker Lokesh Kanagaraj spoke about his plans for the Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU), highlighting the challenges and thrills of building a cohesive cinematic landscape. “I know I need to make three or four sequels in order to complete the LCU. It needs to end as neatly as it started,” he said.
Crafting a cinematic universe is no easy feat, especially given the logistical hurdles of having to tie in elements from the previous films. “All the producers have been friendly with me, and all the heroes have helped me build this universe, without any ego clashes…they’ve all done me a favour. I also need to return the favour,” he said.
Kanagaraj plans to focus on completing the LCU before exploring other genres. “I’ll be 40 [by the time it ends] so I’ll think about doing some other films.”
Reflecting on the inception of the universe, he said that it started as a crossover film, but it was only when he started developing Vikram in 2022 that he knew there was a space for the other characters. “That was quite exciting.”The initial concept was well-received, leading to a broader vision.
Kanagaraj also outlined his plans to complete the LCU. “The immediate one is Kaithi 2 and then I want to do a Rolex standalone film. That's when I can do Vikram 2 and finish the story.”
If not for actor Vijay's retirement plans, he would have considered another sequel and gone ahead with Leo 2, he added.
Fans will have to wait a little longer for further instalments in this franchise, however, as Kanagaraj’s next is Rajinikanth-starrer Coolie, which is not part of the LCU.
