The first day of Lollapalooza India this year was a wild mix of global and Indian music, where psychedelic and pop co-existed with 'Kaanta Laga' and 'What Jhumka?'
When the German record producer and DJ Zedd hit the Lollapalooza stage to play his mashup of Pink Soldiers from the hit Korean show Squid Game, the crowd—which had queued up to watch him perform well before his closing act at 8.30 PM—was so charged that they channelled the electrifying music by doing... bhangra. It was a quintessential Indian sight of unabashed celebration on day one of the music festival, which returned to Mumbai for its third edition on Saturday.

The two-day spectacle of music packed in a range of global as well as homegrown artists across four sprawling stages at the Mahalaxmi Racecourse, resulting in a soundscape of epic proportions. The pop star beats of Shawn Mendes fused with the funk-jazz style of Cory Wong, while the psychedelic energy of the British indie rock sensations Glass Animals picked up from the lingering echoes of singer Jonita Gandhi's What Jhumka?. Hours before Zedd, Anushka played her version of Kaanta Laga on the same stage, which stumped the crowd and had many foot-tapping their way to the stands.
The Indian quotient of the night, however, peaked during Mendes' act. The Canadian pop star's arrival on stage was met with thunderous cheers and some joyful tears. Fans held up placards proclaiming their devotion, while others, hopeful to get a clearer glimpse of their beloved pop star, stood on their friends' shoulders.

"So happy to be here Mumbai, thank you so much," Mendes said as he took to the stage wearing a crisp, black sleeveless shirt, which he later let go of to change into something which got the most deafening roar of the evening: Virat Kohli's number 18 Indian cricket team jersey.
"India, I know you have a watch tomorrow. Good luck. I hope it goes well!" the 26-year-old said, talking about the Champions Trophy finale between India and New Zealand on Sunday.

Mendes' act wasn't a token shout-out to the country, as he got in more Indian flavour on stage, pulling off a surprise classical-pop mash-up with sitar maestro, Niladri Kumar. The singer kept the audience hooked for close to 90 minutes as he performed his chartbusters such as There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back, Treat You Better and Senorita.
Other artists who performed on day one included Talwiinder, Dot., Dhanji, Spyryk, Sahil Vasudeva, Sid Vashi, Frizzell D’Souza and Philtersoup. Rapper Divine also made a special appearance when Gandhi called him to perform their hit track Sitara.
BookMyShow Live has spearheaded Lollapalooza India as the promoter and co-producer for the festival’s Indian edition along with global producers Perry Farrell and C3 Presents.
