There are very few things that have endured every shift in how we love.

Relationships have changed. Timelines have stretched, labels have blurred, and the idea of forever has been questioned throughout timelines.  And yet, when the moment arrives — the one you want to hold onto — it takes on a form that lasts, formed long before us and shaped by time, reflecting the promise of something that endures. Modern relationships may no longer follow tradition, but engagement rings still reveal something surprisingly consistent. Across generations and celebrity culture alike, the natural diamond continues to remain the defining symbol of commitment.

That’s really the reason celebrities continue choosing natural diamonds. In an industry built on rebranding and makeovers, the engagement ring is still expected to communicate something lasting. And natural diamonds, with their age, rarity and symbolism, continue to do just that.

Meghan Markle’s ring remains one of the clearest examples of how natural diamonds continue to carry emotional permanence in a way few other heirlooms can. Designed around a centre diamond sourced from Botswana, a place closely tied to the couple’s relationship and framed by two diamonds from Princess Diana’s personal collection, the three-stone setting transformed provenance into part of the proposal itself.

Hailey Bieber’s oval-cut solitaire takes the opposite approach: One stone, uninterrupted, where cut and clarity do all the work. Originally custom-designed by New York jeweller Jack Solow in close collaboration with Justin Bieber — who proposed in the Bahamas — the ring is intentionally stripped back, reflecting her signature clean girl aesthetic. She has since evolved the piece with a larger oval diamond by Lorraine Schwartz. And yet, even in its minimalism, the focus remained entirely on the natural diamond itself. After Bieber’s engagement, oval-cut natural diamond rings exploded across jewellery trends globally, partly because the ring felt timeless rather than trendy. It reflected a shift in celebrity jewellery, but the natural diamond remained non-negotiable.

Georgina Rodríguez’s ring is one of the clearest examples of how celebrity engagement rings continue to revolve around the natural diamond, even at their most extravagant. Gifted by Cristiano Ronaldo after nearly a decade together, the ring centres an enormous oval-cut natural diamond estimated by experts to weigh between 30 and 40 carats, flanked by two oval side stones in platinum. Jewellery experts speaking to ELLE noted that a diamond of that scale requires entirely different engineering, from reinforced double-claw prongs to a likely hand-forged platinum setting strong enough to support the weight of the stone.

But beyond the spectacle, the ring also reflects something fundamental about celebrity culture: When the goal is to communicate rarity and exclusivity, natural diamonds still remain the benchmark. Stones of that size are exceptionally scarce, which is precisely what gives them their status.  The return of the Toi et Moi ring also reveals how celebrity engagement culture is evolving. On Emily Ratajkowski, Ariana Grande and Megan Fox, the two-stone design is built around contrast, individuality, and personal meaning. And yet, at the centre of that reinvention, the natural diamond remains remarkably constant.   The same shift is visible across Bollywood as well, where engagement rings are becoming more personal in design. Aditi Rao Hydari’s engagement ring with Siddharth moves away from the classic solitaire and instead features a Toi et Moi setting with two natural diamonds, a pear-shaped stone and a round brilliant cut placed on a gold band. Meaning “You and Me” in French, the design represents two individuals coming together while retaining their individuality. The ring was designed by Esshitha Guna, founder of the jewellery brand Andal, who says the idea was clear from the start. “With Aditi akka’s ring, she knew exactly what she wanted,” says Guna. “It was meant to be. Both rings blew up on the internet and we receive messages about them even today.”

Alia Bhatt’s ring is built around an oval-cut natural diamond set on a slim band, with the focus entirely on the stone. The elongated shape enhances its presence while keeping the design minimal. Sonam Kapoor’s ring introduces a different form of natural diamond; a pear-shaped rock on a sleek band, where the drop-like form adds drama without looking chunky. It stands apart in shape, but the stone remains the centre of everything.

And that may be the larger point here. Celebrity engagement rings have evolved dramatically in style over the years, but the natural diamond continues to survive every aesthetic shift around it. Not because tradition demands it anymore, but because it still carries the clearest association with permanence in a culture that rarely stays still for long.

Because trends will shift, aesthetics will evolve, and definitions will continue to change. But when it comes to marking something that is meant to last, the instinct remains the same — and so does the stone at the centre of it.
