Malayalam filmmaker Mahesh Narayanan is all set to direct the biopic of Narain Karthikeyan, India's first Formula One driver, according to a report by Variety.

The Tamil-language film, which is in development at Blue Marble Films, will reportedly be produced by Faraz Ahsan, Vivek Rangachari, and Pratik Maitra, with Amish Shah and Nilaanjan Reeta Datta serving as associate producers. The screenplay of the film will come from Shalini Usha Devi, who wrote Sudha Kongara's critically acclaimed Soorarai Pottru (2021).

“Narain Karthikeyan’s journey isn’t just about racing. It’s about belief in yourself, your country, and a dream no one else can see. That’s what drew me to this story,” Narayanan told the publication. "I’ve been after Narain for years to secure the rights, and after a few honest conversations and the right team coming together, he finally said yes,” said producer Ahsan.

Karthikeyan, who hails from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, competed in Formula One between 2005 and 2012. In 2005, Karthikeyan became India’s first Formula One driver with the Jordan F1 team. He later became the first Indian to score F1 World Championship points, finishing fourth at the United States Grand Prix. He then joined Williams F1 as a test driver.

Narayanan's next film will be the awaited Malayalam film Patriot. The film marks Mohanlal and Mammootty’s reunion in key roles after a gap of 17 years since Twenty:20 (2008). The shoot for the film began late last year. Earlier this February, producer Anto Joseph released a video welcoming Nayanthara to the film’s sets.

Speaking about the challenges of bringing together such a big cast, Mahesh Narayanan said, “It is not based on any real-life incident, but I cannot reveal more about the film’s themes at this point. However, it is great to have Fahadh and Chackochan amongst the cast; they are my friends who always want me to do better and push me constantly. Having said that, it's not like I am utilising them just for cameos, they have solid characters with lots of material to perform. The same goes for Lal sir (Mohanlal); he is going to appear in a proper full-fledged role. Now my challenge is to present all these actors on-screen together in the best possible manner.”
