First-time filmmaker Sivaranjini J’s Malayalam film Victoria has been selected for the Golden Goblet Awards at the Shanghai International Film Festival. It is the only Indian film to be shortlisted for the award this year, and it will compete in the Asia New Talent Section. The festival will take place from June 12 to 22 this week.

Victoria features an all-woman cast and is set almost entirely within the confines of a beauty salon in suburban Kerala.

The film begins when Victoria, a beautician (played by Meenakshi Jayan), confronts her conservative Catholic family’s expectations while navigating her relationship with a Hindu lover. The film explores how women find solace and autonomy at their workplace, rather than in their own homes. The beauty parlour in Victoria becomes a space of rebellion, refuge, and solidarity. The film is produced by the Kerala State Film Development Corporation (KFDC).

Victoria becomes the fifth film produced by the KFDC as part of an initiative to support female filmmakers. Most recently, as a part of this initiative, KFDC had produced B 32 to 44 by Shruthi Sharanyam and Nishiddho by Tara Ramanujam.
