Tamil filmmaker Mari Selvaraj has faced online backlash for collaborating with rapper Vedan, who is facing multiple sexual harassment allegations. Vedan, alongside rapper Arivu, has sung 'Rekka Rekka', a track from Selvaraj’s upcoming film Bison starring Dhruv Vikram. Written by Selvaraj and Arivu, the song was released on September 16. Bison is slated for theatrical release on October 17.

Rapper Hirandas Murali, popularly known as Vedan, was arrested on September 10 in connection with a rape case filed by a female doctor in Kerala. The Thrikkakara police recorded his arrest following two days of interrogation. Vedan had already been accused of sexual abuse by multiple women during the #MeToo movement and, earlier this year, faced fresh allegations of harassment. His legal troubles were compounded when police allegedly recovered six grams of ganja from his Kochi apartment, leading to another arrest.

The inclusion of Vedan in Bison has angered a section of social media users, many of whom accused Selvaraj of “platforming an abuser.” The criticism also extended to director Pa Ranjith, who previously collaborated with actor John Vijay despite allegations of sexual misconduct against him. One user on X wrote, “Pa. Ranjith and Mari Selvaraj continue platforming artists like John Vijay and Vedan. They become one with the same enemies they are fighting despite the movement they represent. Highly unacceptable.” Another comment read, “Really disappointing to see Mari working with predators like Vedan.”

The controversy has placed Selvaraj, widely respected for films like Pariyerum Perumal and Vaazhai, in an uncomfortable position. Known for his socially conscious cinema addressing caste oppression and systemic inequalities, his decision to work with Vedan has been seen as contradictory to the values his films uphold.

Meanwhile, Vedan remains a divisive figure in Kerala’s independent rap scene. He rose to prominence in 2019 with his album Voice of the Voiceless, praised for its raw exploration of caste discrimination. But his growing list of legal cases and allegations has overshadowed his artistic work, sparking a wider debate about accountability in the arts and whether celebrated filmmakers should separate talent from personal conduct.

As Bison nears release, the backlash shows no signs of quieting, with audiences questioning the ethics of giving space to artists facing grave allegations.
