“For those who control the bard, control everything,” says The Matrix legend Hugo Weaving in an unsettling voiceover for MAYA, an ambitious multi-media universe dreamed up by Anand Gandhi and Zain Memon.

Gandhi, best known for Ship of Theseus and Tumbbad, and Menon, known for designing the hit political board game Shasn, have launched eye-popping assets from their science-fiction fantasy universe developed by the next-generation storytelling studio, Department of Lore Inc.

As per the creators, the MAYA narrative unfolds across films, games, novels, toys, graphic novels, and immersive experiences. The first novel in the franchise, Maya: Seed Takes Root, launches globally on August 19, 2025.

Combining sci-fi, fantasy, and philosophy, the speculative universe delves into questions of connection, manipulation and choice.

“In Maya: Seed Takes Root, an extraordinary biological network of sentient trees, known simply as "Maya," acts as the living internet of planet Neh. Every citizen “tethers” daily to Maya, entering shared dreamscapes to work, learn and seek whatever flavors of impossible their hearts desire. The immortal Divyas harvest this data to see billions of possible futures. They don't rule through force. “Why issue commands when you can shape desires?” Everyone is tracked. Everyone is “nudged”. Except one,” read a synopsis.

Developed over four years, the MAYA universe has been crafted in collaboration with evolutionary biologists, linguists, architects, philosophers, and system theorists.

Unveiling the vision and intent behind MAYA, Anand Gandhi said, “We’re witnessing the greatest experiment in narrative control in human history. MAYA is a response to that.”  The series aims to demystify the invisible architecture of control, Gandhi said, from the “data trails we leave behind to the subconscious nudges we don’t even notice. This universe is a toolkit for immunity against digital manipulation.”

“MAYA isn’t about heroes vs villains,” shared Zain Memon. “It’s about the defining conflicts of our civilization today: truth vs dogma, innovation vs stagnation, freedom vs control, and haves vs have-nots.”

Gandhi’s directorial debut, Ship of Theseus (2012), was one of the most acclaimed Indian films of the past decade. He also co-produced the documentary An Insignificant Man, directed by Khushboo Ranka and Vinay Shukla.
