Anurag Basu’s Metro...In Dino, a spiritual successor to his 2007 ensemble Life in a... Metro, earned a total of ₹18.65 crore (India nett) over its first weekend at the box office. The film, which brings together a large ensemble including Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan, Konkona Sen Sharma, Pankaj Tripathi, Neena Gupta, Anupam Kher, Fatima Sana Shaikh, and Ali Fazal, has shown a steady upward trend since its release on Friday.

The film opened with ₹4.05 crore on Friday, saw an encouraging jump to ₹6.81 crore on Saturday, and maintained its upward momentum with ₹7.79 crore on Sunday, bringing its total weekend collection to ₹18.65 crore (India nett).

Backed by largely positive word-of-mouth and favourable reviews highlighting the film’s layered storytelling and performances, Metro...In Dino benefitted from its urban appeal and strong music by Pritam. The anthology format and mature treatment of romance seem to have resonated with tier one audiences.

Produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, Anurag Basu and Taani Basu, the film is reportedly mounted on a budget of over ₹80 crores. While the weekend performance is respectable, particularly for a film with no major box office draw among its cast, the real test begins with its Monday performance. A strong hold on weekdays will be crucial if the film is to recover its cost and be considered commercially viable.

The film’s trajectory may also influence the box office outlook for three other romance-driven titles releasing later this month: Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan starring Vikrant Massey, YRF's Saiyaara marking Ahaan Panday’s debut, and tentatively Param Sundari starring Sidharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor which is scheduled for the last week of July. If the release is not delayed, Param Sundari will face a box office clash with Ajay Devgn's Son of Sardaar 2.

With Metro...In Dino leading the pack, industry observers will be watching closely to see if this month signals a revival of the modern romance genre at the box office.
