Tom Cruise is back in action — and possibly for the last time — as the first trailer for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning lands with a familiar mix of suspense, stunts, and smoldering stares. Billed as the conclusion to a story nearly three decades in the making, the film marks the eighth installment in the long-running spy franchise that began in 1996.

The two-minute trailer teases a globe-spanning mission haunted by the past, as Cruise’s Ethan Hunt confronts old enemies and impossible odds, once again choosing loyalty and sacrifice over self-preservation. In this final chapter, Ethan makes an appeal, "I need you to trust me one last time." A direct sequel to Dead Reckoning Part One (2023), which grossed over $571 million worldwide, The Final Reckoning is helmed by longtime collaborator Christopher McQuarrie and hits theaters May 23.

Series regulars Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, and Vanessa Kirby return alongside newcomers Hannah Waddingham, Nick Offerman, and Katy O’Brian. But the real spectacle remains Cruise himself, now 62, sprinting across rooftops, dangling from helicopters, and clinging to the last gasp of analog heroism.

For a franchise defined by ever-escalating stunts — and a star who insists on doing them all — The Final Reckoning promises to be more than just another summer tentpole. It feels like a baton pass, or at least a long goodbye.
