Directed by Ram Gopal Varma in his debut outing, the iconic 1989 film will re-release on November 14.
Telugu superstar Nagarjuna has announced the re-release date of his landmark film Siva as November 14. He made the announcement on Saturday, September 20, coinciding with the 101st birth anniversary of his late father, Akkineni Nageswara Rao.
Directed by Ram Gopal Varma in his debut outing, the iconic 1989 film is returning to cinemas in 4K with Dolby Atmos. Backed by Annapurna Studios, the re-release version will take us back to the campuses of 80s Hyderabad, following the eponymous hero and his gang of friends as they are exploited by criminal elements.
Varma, who announced his arrival with Siva before directing the iconic Hindi films Satya and Rangeela, said the film's return to big screens in an updated format will add to its enduring appeal. "I can't wait for people to watch the film, and have an absolutely immersive experience," the filmmaker said.
With music by the legendary Ilaiyaraaja, Siva also starred Amala and Raghuvaran. The film’s sound has been remastered from its original mono mix to Dolby Atmos using advanced AI-based technologies.
In 1990, the film was remade in Hindi as Shiva, with the lead actors reprising their roles. Apart from its enormous box office success, Siva was also featured in the Indian Panorama mainstream section of the 13th IFFI (1990) and won three Nandi Awards: Best Director (Varma), Best First Film of a Director, and Best Dialogue Writer for Tanikella Bharani.
The teaser of the restored Siva was attached to Rajinikanth’s Coolie in theatres. Nagarjuna played the antagonist in the recent Lokesh Kanagaraj directorial.
Speaking about bringing Siva back to theatres, the actor-producer had earlier said, “The fact that it remains one of the most talked-about films even after 36 years motivated my brother Venkat Akkineni and me to plan its re-release in the grandest way possible. We felt we owed it to the audience who made it such a cult classic, and also to a new generation who may have only seen it on YouTube. So RGV, Venkat, and I decided to present it once again to audiences with an unprecedented Dolby Atmos sound experience and 4K visuals.”
