The actor has spoken up against the arbitrary rules used to select winners
A day after actor Urvashi was given the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for her role in Malayalam film Ullozhukku, she has spoken out against the arbitrary rules used to select winners.
In a television interview to Asianet News, the award winner hit out at the way awards were being given. When asked if she would be rejecting her award she said, “Let’s wait and see. These awards are not pension money to be accepted happily without questioning anything. We too need to clarify certain details on how just (legit) these awards are. We have been working in movies for so long, and I still do not understand the basis on which such awards are being adjudged.”
Urvashi had also won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress earlier for her role in Achuvinte Amma (2005).
Adding more, she asked what set her performance apart from the one that was being judged for Best Actress. She asks, “Why wasn’t my performance deemed fit to be considered for Best Actress? It could even have been a shared win. Similarly, what reduces actor Vijayaraghavan’s performance compared to Shah Rukh Khan’s in Jawan?"
Vijayaraghavan had been awarded Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Pookaalam.
She went on to explain how she too was asked to act in Pookaalam, the movie that gave Vijayaraghavan the award. But because it involved more than six hours of make-up time, she said she had refused to do the movie given the hard work it demanded. “I said I will not do it even if you give me crores. But he endured all of that and performed; that alone deserves at least a Special Mention.”
The 2023 film spoke about a nonagenarian deciding to go ahead with divorce after more than 50 years of marriage. Apart from the award for Best Supporting Actor, Pookaalam also brought laurels for its editor Midhun Murali for best editor.
Urvashi also asked why a Malayalam movie like Aadujeevitham (The Goat Life) was overlooked during the ceremony.
